National academic network

The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey established in 1996 the Turkish National Academic Network & Information Center (ULAKBIM). One of the tasks of this centre is to manage the academic network U;akNet. The Turkish Government provides the € 17.7 million funding for the network in 2004.

The 155 Mbps ATM backbone of UlakNet has Points of Presence in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir. More than 140 Turkish universities, research organisations and governmental organisations are directly connected to the backbone. Larger organisations have typically a link in the range 2 Mbps to 155 Mbps. The connection to GÉANT is 155 Mbps.
